It seems like everyone today is looking for an edge.Of all the things that are part of my morning ritual, this has to be the best for getting you going, keeping you going, plus staying healthy and focused all day. Not to mention lose weight. Drink coffee with grass fed butter and coconut or MCT oil.
For those of you that have never heard of this, it may sound a little weird, but once you try it, you will fall in love! This has become a morning ritual for my wife and I. My wife was NOT a coffee drinker before this, but now drinks it religiously. *You can substitute tea for the coffee, but its not quite as beneficial* Lets break this down and see what benefits this has.
First, the coffee should be a higher end coffee, free from mycotoxins. I use either organic beans from a local roaster, or buy them from a vendor online. One of the most popular brands is BULLETPROOF™ coffee. The creator is Dave Asprey, which really brought this idea mainstream. Coffee has gotten a bad reputation over the years, and I think a lot of that has to do with the way it is processed and stored. If not done correctly, the coffee develops mycotoxins or mold toxins, which can be very hazardous to your health, especially to people with sensitivities. This can cause the jitteryness and crash. As long as you keep it to 1-3 cups a day, there are many benefits. My point is that bad coffee is bad for you, but good coffee is definitely good for you. Let’s look at some of them.
- High in antioxidants
- Powerful thermogenic properties which can accelerate fat loss
- Can improve insulin sensitivity
- Can lower risk of stroke and diabetes
- May have anticancer properties
- High in polyphenols, which feed good bacteria in the gut
- Can improve exercise, memory and brain function
The next part to the coffee, is grassfed butter or ghee. You may be asking yourself how butter can help you lose weight and stay focused. The answer is, its full of GOOD fat. Contrary to what many of us has been taught, certain types of fats are very beneficial to us. Healthy fats are a very important nutrient for the body and brain. A healthy man’s body is made of 15 percent fat, while a healthy woman’s body is made up of 29 percent fat. Parts of everything in our bodies are made of fat, especially our brain. The right fats are nutritious, and high energy sources that keep your body and brain running at peak performance. Low fat diets starve our brain and body. Our body and brain needs healthy fats because we cannot produce our own omega-3s, which our bodies need to function. So, healthy fats are a building block of what make us healthy, and do nothing in regards to make us fat.
I use raw grass fed butter or ghee from a local dairy most of the time, but when I can’t, I usually use unsalted KerryGold, which is a pasteurized butter from grassfed cows. Products made from grass fed cows are much higher in omegas-3s and other nutrients, and can even be tolerated by some people that have dairy allergies. Ghee can be tolerated by people with a dairy allergy better than butter.
The last part to this, is the MCT or coconut oil. MCTs or medium chain triglycerides are an extremely healthy saturated fat (good fat), found in coconut oil. I use Brain Octane, which is a C8 MCT. MCT oil is 6 times stronger than normal coconut oil. MCT oil is taken straight to the liver, instead of being metabolized through the digestion process like other fats. Here are just a few of the benefits:
- Provides instant and well sustained energy
- Improves blood sugar regulation
- Improves metabolism
- Improves ketone production (rocket fuel for the brain)
- May improve thyroid function
- Improves appetite regulation
So, if you want to have an unfair advantage over your coworkers, or just want a way to get more productivity and more out of life, I highly recommend drinking this every morning. Just brew the coffee as your normally do (I prefer french press or a pour over), then put the coffee, butter and MCT oil in a blender, and you will have a frothy, healthy, and tasty high octane fuel to get you through the day.
This kind of coffee is part of my morning routine every day. Some days I add one or two egg yolks from pastured chickens depending on my hunger level and what my body needs that day. I can’t imagine starting the day without it.
I personally have tried pretty much every product from Bulletproof, and the quality is hard to match. If you'd like to see what else they offer, check them out here.
